QUOTE 1:
"Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay" (Fitzgerald, 78) -In this chapter we learn the hidden story of these longtime lovers. Knowing that Daisy lived just across the bay, Gatsby purchased this elaborate mansion in hopes to meet her some time again. After waiting five years for Daisy to attend one of his parties, Gatsby finally comes up with a plan to see her and will attempt to revisit the love they once had.
1) Foreshadowing: Knowing that Nick will invite Daisy for tea, we assume that they will soon meet and old romance will spark again.
2) Character revelation: We learn the real reason why Gatsby hosts all of his parties; in order to somehow capture Daisy's attention
3) Pathos: We feel sympathy for Gatsby as he longs for Daisy's love and lives his life every day wondering if he will ever meet her again.
4) Suggest a theme: This quote shines light on the theme of "Memory and the Past," explaining how Gatsby has yet to move on and is still living in the past. Essentially, Gatsby's vision of his future is determined by his past.

QUOTE 2:
"He's the man who fixed the World's Series back in 1919" (Fitzgerald, 73)
This quote by Gatsby about Wolfsheim implies that due to Gatsby's close relation with Wolfsheim, he was involved in his illegal business. While we do not know for sure that Gatsby gained his wealth through illegal bootlegging, it is certain that his dealings were somewhat shady. The air of mystery that surrounds Gatsby from the beginning of the novel does not help his case for being a man with honourable means. Gatsby claims to have inherited ancestors money and attended Oxford, but with this in his past, Gatsby is far from what he claims to be.
1)Character Revelation: We learn that Gatsby is not the man that he wants everyone to see him as, and has lived much of his recent life off of lies.
2) Advance/Complicate the plot: Discovering this information complicates our opinion on Gatsby and leads us to wonder what other lies Gatsby has set up.
